A 26-year-old labourer died on Wednesday night after a cement trolley suddenly toppled at a Bhendi Bazaar construction site. The trolley’s mechanical link reportedly gave way, causing it to fall on the worker. He was rushed to J.J. Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Early police findings point to equipment failure and possible negligence by the contractor responsible for operations at the site. A case of accidental death has been registered, and statements from workers and supervisors are being recorded to determine whether proper safety checks and maintenance protocols were followed.
The Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment is led by the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT), though this specific site work was being carried out by an independent contractor. SBUT issued a statement expressing condolences and clarifying its position:
“We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic accident and extend our heartfelt condolences to the worker’s family and colleagues. While the incident pertains to a contractor operating on site and did not involve SBUT, yet we remain fully committed to cooperating with the authorities as required.”
The incident underscores the need for strict adherence to safety standards to protect workers on dense urban redevelopment sites. Authorities are continuing their investigation.
